Letter: State must reject voucher scheme

The New Hampshire Legislature is currently considering what has been dubbed “the most expansive voucher program in the country.” It is a dangerous proposal to avoid the New Hampshire Constitution’s prohibition on using public taxes to fund religious education. Please write to your lawmakers to oppose this dangerous proposal.
If passed, House Bill 20 would entitle parents who pull their children out of the public school system to have the state pay into an educational savings account an amount equal to 95% of the statewide average basic support per pupil, plus “differential aid” that the student may qualify for. Legislators estimate that at least 85% of these funds would be used to fund private religious education.
