High in the Sky: Flight VT Takes Young People Airborne

A participant preparing to fly Tyler Brown admits that he wasn t the most motivated student as a teen attending South Burlington High School. But something clicked when he started in the aviation program at Burlington Technical Center. Being around airplanes changed my life, Brown said. I went from being a typical student to a straight-A student. He went on to work at the Vermont Flight Academy, which is based at the Burlington International Airport. Now the academy s executive director, Brown wants to inspire the next generation by giving them an airborne experience. On June 5, the academy and Beta Technologies partnered to officially launch Flight VT, a program that provides free hourlong aerial trips for young people. Beta brought its electric Alia aircraft for attendees to see, and the Vermont Air National Guard brought an F-35.

Vermont diaper bank marks 1 million diapers distributed

Vermont babies were covered, a million times over, thanks to the Junior League of Champlain Valley.  The group planned to give away its one millionth diaper June 2, just about a year and a half into the organization s diaper bank program. The group recognized a need families can spend $100 a month diapering one baby, and purchases don t qualify for state or federal subsidies. Nationwide, one in three families could not afford paying for diapers before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the need greatly increased as more people lost or left jobs to stay home during the crisis. The diaper bank, established in fall 2018, quickly outgrew storage in volunteers personal homes and in 2019 they began using a warehouse at the Burlington International Airport. At that time, they were able to distribute 100,000 diapers a year in Chittenden County. As the pandemic increased need, the program expanded distribution to food shelves in 13 of the 14 Vermont counties.
