Myanmar’s UN ambassador, who strongly opposed the military coup in his country, insists that he remains the permanent representative to the UN, but the Burmese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed the UN that the ambassador has been terminated and his deputy is in charge.
The dispute over who is recognized as Myanmar’s UN ambassador the representative of the generals who carried out the Feb. 1 coup or of the ousted democratically elected government is under discussion and could end up in the UN General Assembly, where all 193 UN members have seats.

Police in Myanmar’s biggest city yesterday fired tear gas at defiant crowds who returned to the streets to protest last month’s coup, despite reports that security forces had killed at least 18 people a day earlier.
