MAJOR roadworks that were due to cause chaos on town centre roads have been postponed. A section of Market Street in Dalton was due to be closed for 42 days to allow an ageing gas man to be replaced. But the road closure has not gone ahead and works have been postponed until later in the year. A failure to find an appropriate diversion route for buses and issues with the temporary traffic regulation order to close the road have been named as reasons for the delay. Gas company Cadent is waiting to be told when it can carry out the work.

ACTION is need to ensure vulnerable people do not fall through the net as Barrow comes out lockdown, a councillor has warned. Bill McEwan said the end of the £20 uplift for Universal Credit claimants as well as the halt on evictions have an adverse effect during the area s recovery from the pandemic. The Ormsgill councillor called for the council s Covid working group, which he chairs, to hold a meeting. Addressing Barrow Council s Overview and Scrutiny Committee, he said: We are coming out of recovery now on the 19th and we want to see what s going to happen because I reckon a lot of vulnerable people and the elderly will fall through the net here because they re taking the £20 uplift off Universal Credit, which is a bad thing that will cause problems, and you ve got the evictions coming back in.
