Assam has, in the last few days, seen certain significant developments on the insurgency front. While Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had, in his maiden press conference immediately after taking oath on May 10 had appealed to Paresh Barua, chief of the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom - Independent (ULFA-I) chief to give up violence and come to the negotiation table in the interest of restoring permanent peace in the state, Barua too has responded quite positively. Violence, kidnapping, extortion can never solve problems, it only makes things complicated, Sarma had said in his very first press conference as CM, appealing to all militant groups to come to the negotiation table and play a role in restoring peace. Assam chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said, “We need to move cautiously in this regard (peace process) and we are moving in this direction.”
Sarma had earlier said that the outfit can show its intent for talks by releasing an abducted employee of ONGC Ritul Saikia. ULFA-I released Saikia and on Saturday he reached his home.

Kidnapped ONGC employee Ritul Saikia was released by ULFA(I) militants on Saturday morning in Myanmar near its border with India s Nagaland, police said.
Saikia, kidnapped on April 21, was released near the border in Longwa village of Mon district in Nagaland after 31 days, a top official at Assam Police headquarters told PTI.
He was released around 7 am on the Myanmar side and he walked around 40 minutes to cross to the Indian side, the Additional DGP-ranked official said. Saikia has been taken to the Mon police station by the Army and Nagaland Police. A team of the Assam Police is also present there and doing the formalities to bring him back home by today evening, he added.
