[THIS WEEK’S QUESTION: On Thursday, Darrell Allison became the 12th chancellor of Fayetteville State University, an historically Black university, the history of which stretches back to 1867. His tenure officially begins March 15. Allison is a former member of the UNC Board of Governors and resigned from that position last fall to pursue the top job at FSU. He beat out more than 60 other candidates and was appointed by the UNC board, which governs FSU and other state universities. Some have objected to his appointment, while others say he should be given a fair chance to succeed. What are your own thoughts about the selection of Allison to lead FSU? 10 facts about Charles Chesnutt, Fayetteville s famous Black writer

Charles Chesnutt (1858-1932) has permanently written Fayetteville into literary history. He is considered the first Black novelist to gain nationwide acclaim. His best-known writings were post-Civil War and Reconstruction stories of the color line, some of them set in the fictional town of “Patesville” a thinly disguised Fayetteville.  Chesnutt was born in Cleveland to free Black parents from Fayetteville. When he was 9, the family moved back to Fayetteville after the Civil War. Later, as a married man in his twenties, he returned to Cleveland, finding better opportunities up north to support his family. There, he would pass the bar and start a successful legal court reporting business.

Wake Technical Community College As part of a statewide program, ACTS team members will work with similar programs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University to share best practices in support of community college transfer students. Additionally, NCA&T will expand its ACTS partnerships to include other North Carolina community colleges that have articulation and dual enrollment agreements with the university. “It is exciting to see this important investment in bridging the gap and advancing academic STEM opportunities in a way that has regional and statewide significance, leveraging the strength of NCA&T and our community college system,” said Nancy Johnston, executive director of the Piedmont Triad Office of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
