Lily Nottage is preparing to make her filmmaking debut during this month’s Halifax Black Film Festival. The graphic designer, photographer and digital artist can now add filmmaker to her list of accomplishments when her short film Farrin premieres during the online festival beginning Feb. 23. Nottage, who is originally from Nassau, Bahamas, studied at Acadia University and while living in Nova Scotia, visited restaurants for a potential documentary on food.

. NASCAR’s first Arab American female driver has made her debut at Daytona International Speedway.  Toni Breidinger got behind the wheel for the 2021 stock car competition ARCA Menards Series and NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series in Florida on Saturday, according to the racing organization. . The 21-year-old, who is part of the racing team Young’s Motorsports, is of Lebanese descent. Toni says Daytona has always been on her bucket list and that this is the biggest race of her career so far, but she was ready for it. Before the race, she said the event was a step in the right direction for her to hopefully race in the Daytona 500 one day. “I’m honored and excited to be the first, but I don’t want to be the last,” the California native says. ‘I hope I can pave the way for future female Arab drivers as well.”

UC Berkeley College of Chemistry names chief diversity, equity officer Last Updated February 9, 2021 UC Berkeley’s College of Chemistry welcomed Brice Yates as the inaugural chief diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, officer Monday. As chief, Yates will create DEI initiatives for members of the college at all levels, including faculty, staff and students, according to a campus press release. Among his first steps will be working with Anne Baranger, associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion for the College of Chemistry, to develop a five-year strategic plan for initiatives to increase DEI efforts within the college. “Within STEM fields, underrepresented minority student numbers are often lower,” Yates said in an email. “It’s important that we focus on initiatives that highlight diversity, equity and inclusion for underrepresented minority students in order to increase recruitment, retention and graduation rates.”
