Mary Elizabeth Glover Bastin

January 6, 1927 — January 8, 2021 On January 8th, following the celebration of her 94th birthday two days prior, Mary Glover Bastin passed peacefully into the Lord’s hands while surrounded by her family. The eldest child of Thomas Maxwell Shircliff and Martha Bayard Somes, Mary was born in Vincennes, Indiana, on January 6, 1927. She graduated from the Ladywood School in Indianapolis, attended the Sorbonne in Paris as one of the first students immediately after World War II, and graduated from Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York. Mary had the rare ability to grace every room she entered; she seldom expressed an unkind word and made each person she met feel as if they were the only person in the room. Though schooled in the social graces of that era, she was a woman ahead of her time and strived to experience the world.

Guatemalan-Maya Center serves hundreds of families

Guatemalan-Maya Center serves hundreds of families Director of Development Ellen Vaughan said they are serving over 200,000 Palm Beach County residents. Since the start of the pandemic, the need for food is greater than ever, Vaughan said. “We were once at one time serving 400 pounds of food. And, now, that’s jumped to 1.5 million pounds of food a month is what we distribute,” Vaughan said. On Tuesday morning, Deacon Jeremy Palermo drove an empty U-Haul truck into the distribution warehouse. When he is not ministering, he gives the Guatemala-Maya Center a hand with food distribution. With the help of volunteers, he loaded 10 pallets of fresh vegetables and produce.

Turkey Trot helps provide Thanksgiving meals to more than 4,300 needy people in Palm Beach County

Palm Beach Daily News It wasn’t the Turkey Trot familiar from past years, but this year’s United Way event still was able to bring Thanksgiving meals to more than 4,300 needy people in Palm Beach County.  Normally a 5K run, this 12th annual edition of the Turkey Trot was held virtually over the Thanksgiving week because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some 696 people registered for the virtual race, which began Nov. 20 and ended Nov. 27. All participants were awarded a T-shirt, finisher medal and goody bag.  The Town of Palm Beach United Way uses the proceeds from Turkey Trot registrations and donations to award grants to local nonprofit agencies that provide take-home meals and socially distanced Thanksgiving celebrations for people who would otherwise go without a holiday dinner.
