More Victorians will be able to return home safely from Sydney this week with updated health advice allowing some border restrictions to be downgraded.
Premier Daniel Andrews and Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton announced today that, due to the reduced exposure risk and low community transmission in some areas of Greater Sydney, a number of red zone Local Government Areas (LGAs) will transition to orange – allowing Victorians in those areas to return home if they want to.
As of 6:00pm (Victorian AEDT) Monday 18 January, the Blue Mountains, Wollongong and all Greater Sydney LGAs except for
Blacktown City, Burwood, Canada Bay City, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield City, Inner West, Liverpool City, Parramatta City and Strathfield Municipality will be declared an orange zone due to the improved epidemiological conditions there.
“Based on the figures for the Otago rail trail in New Zealand, which is the most similar with an average spend of $200 a rider, that’s [potentially] $3m injected into each village a year,” Jardine said.
“It would lead to accommodation, food outlets, transport and support services for the riders. What’s the alternative for this region? The alternative is pretty ugly.”
Ken Lister, who chairs the Monaro rail trail committee, says there is enormous enthusiasm for the project.
It would involve a capital cost of $63m but could bring $25m a year into local communities, Lister says. The plan is for “a spine and ribs” – with precinct trails around the villages so riders can enjoy local sites.

The Victorian Government will today enact new measures to protect our state from the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Based on the most up-to-date information available, the current outbreak in New South Wales is linked to a returned traveler in that state’s Hotel Quarantine program. However, concerningly, there remain missing links in the chains of transmission and case numbers and exposure sites continue to grow.
Without mandatory mask rules and stay at home orders across Sydney, our Government and state’s health authorities do not have confidence that the situation remains safe.
It’s why from 11:59pm tonight, the Greater Sydney area and the Central Coast will be designated as a ‘red zone’. That means people who live in these communities, or have visited these communities since 11 December 2020, cannot enter Victoria. Anyone from this zone found trying to enter Victoria in breach of this order will be subject to 14-day mandatory hotel quarantine.

Originally started in 2009, GIVIT allows charities to list items, skills, or services that people may need. In response, online users can find a specific cause to donate what they personally have to those who need it.
