Montvale NJ diversity committee donates books for Black History Month

Her second-grade daughter is reading  Marley Dias Gets it Done ,  authored by Marley Dias, a 14-year-old activist, writer and founder of the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign, who is a native of West Orange. She is an avid reader, Auer said of her daughter.  Reading books like that, it inspires her because she sees herself and she is so excited.   For Black History Month in February, the borough s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, which Auer leads, donated books to the Memorial Elementary School library that  kids can enjoy year-round.  Our committee likes to think of innovative ways to celebrate, Auer said. We thought it would be a great way to introduce some diverse characters.

Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks, by Jason Reynolds  A novel with ten tales about what happens after the dismissal bell rings. It does cover some really intense subjects, bullying, cancer and even a chapter on boogers. Both age-appropriate and tastefully done. - Annamarie, Children’s Librarian South to a Very Old Place , by Albert Murray In 1970 the editor of Harper s asked the African-American writer Albert Murray to take a road trip through the South and write about it. The result was too long and experimental to be published in a magazine, but it makes a beautiful, maddening, moving and lyrical book. - Kevin, Head of Reference

Charles Deslondes, a slave driver of Haitian descent, marshaled an insurrection against the slaver Manuel Andry, turning the tools of the plantation the ax, the sugarcane knife against his master. “An attempt was made to assassinate me by the stroke of an axe, and my poor son has been ferociously murdered,” Andry wrote of the attack in a letter to William C.C. Claiborne, then governor of Louisiana.
