A former Castlerea priest has been named as the pedestrian killed in a County Cork tragedy this afternoon when a Bus Éireann driver suffered a suspected fatal heart attack, lost control of his bus, struck and fatally injured him
The incident occurred at about 1.35 p.m. when the Bus Éireann 216 service from Monkstown to Cork University Hospital veered across the road and collided with a wall before continuing straight ahead and knocking down Fr Con Cronin (72).
Fr Cronin, who was serving as curate in the Harbour Parishes of Passage West and Monkstown, had just left the nearby Bosun pub after lunch with the local sacristan and the pair had almost crossed the road and were about to mount the footpath when the collision happened.

A candlelight vigil was held in a Cork harbour town last night for a bus driver and priest who were killed in a collision yesterday.
The Irish Examiner reports that prayers will also be offered in Passage West and Monkstown today for the two victims, who were named locally last night as bus driver Mark Wills, who was in his 50s, and Fr Con Cronin, a curate in Passage West, who was in his late 60s.
Gardaí say they are investigating whether the driver of the 216 Monkstown to Cork University Hospital (CUH) Bus Éireann service suffered a medical trauma behind the wheel causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

The 72 year old died when Bus Éireann driver Mark Wils suffered a suspected fatal heart attack, lost control of his bus, struck and fatally injured him.
It s understood Fr Cronin, who was serving as curate in the Harbour Parishes of Passage West and Monkstown, had moved the local sacristan whom he was with out of the path of the bus, before he was struck.

The priest who was killed after being hit by a bus in Co Cork yesterday is being remembered in Castlerea where he worked for a time.
Cork native Fr Con Cronin, who was in his 60s, was struck by the Bus Eireann vehicle after it veered out of control in Monkstown shortly after 1.30 yesterday afternoon.
The driver of the bus, who was in his 50s, suffered an apparent cardiac arrest and also died.
Post mortem examinations are to take place today.
Fr Cronin was serving as curate in the Harbour Parishes of Passage West and Monkstown.
