When police brought Krishna to recover the weapons used in the murder, he assaulted Sub-Inspector Deepan who opened fire in self-defence. Krishna, 31, the main accused in the beheading of a history-sheeter K. Veera alias Veerangan late on Tuesday, was killed in an alleged police encounter at Kumudiyankuppam near Panruti on Wednesday morning. The ‘encounter’ in ‘self-defence’ took place in the Pudupettai police station limits.

Krishna, 31, the main accused in the beheading of history-sheeter K. Veera alias Veerangan, was allegedly killed in a shootout with the police at Kumudiyankuppam, near Panruti, on Wednesday morning.
The “encounter in self-defence” took place in the Pudupettai police station limits.
Cuddalore Superintendent of Police M. Sree Abhinav said the police had tracked five of the 10 accused, including Krishna, within a few hours of the beheading. The arrested were identified as Arun Pandian, 27, Sudhakar, 23, Ramanan, 24 and Rajasekhar, 23.

A two-day-old baby girl, who was stolen from the women’s post-operative ward at the Cuddalore Government General Hospital on Saturday, was traced to a government hospital in Puducherry within hours of the incident.
Police sources said Bhagyalakshmi, 24, wife of Manikandan of Panruti, was admitted to the Cuddalore GH on Wednesday. She delivered a baby girl on Friday morning.
Her mother-in-law Kasapayi was helping her in the hospital. On Saturday afternoon, Kasapayi went to a temple near the hospital, when one Lavanya of Panithittu in Puducherry, befriended Bhagyalakshmi.

The Union Territory saw 39 persons testing positive for COVID-19 while no deaths were reported on Thursday.
Mahe reported the most cases (15), followed by Puducherry (14) and Karaikal (10). No cases were seen in Yanam. The cases were confirmed from 2,050 tests.
With 25 patients getting discharged on recovery, the number of active cases in the Union Territory stood at 293. Of this, 127 were in hospitals and 166 in home isolation.
The test positivity rate was 1.90%, case fatality rate 1.66% and recovery rate 97.59%.
