On Sunday, Julie Nicholson ran for the first time through the spot in the Panhandle where a car had nearly killed her.
She was jogging on Jan. 4 last year when a car speeding north on Masonic Avenue blew through a red light, hit another car and careened into the park straight at her. She flew 30 feet, landing with a thud. She assumed she was seconds from death but remembers thinking, “OK, I lived.”

Biking through the middle of San Francisco with an octogenarian is not something anyone would have tried five years ago, unless they were looking to collect an inheritance.
Most bicyclists making this trip used to be daredevils or people who
really knew what they were doing. The dream of a city where 8- and 80-year-old cyclists could bisect the center with confidence seemed a hundred years away.
