PARLER, THE RIGHT-WING “free speech” social media network based in Henderson, shut down this week after Amazon pulled the plug. You didn’t miss much. Parler was a bleak pocket universe of racist vitriol and giddy Trumpian nihilism. Whether Parler comes back, and in what form, is anyone’s guess. But one certainty is that in its brief, manic life, Parler managed to make history: It was broadly implicated in helping to incite the siege on the Capitol Jan. 6, accused of stoking the violent and inflammatory rhetoric that culminated in a mob attack on Congress that led to the deaths of five.

My Turn: Sununu must stop enabling white nationalism, anti-government extremism

It is concerning that Gov. Chris Sununu canceled his inauguration ceremony due to concerns over armed protestors. No one should be subject to armed harassment and intimidation.
As Sununu seeks ways to protect himself, now would be a good time for him to also take responsibility for the ways he has fostered the growth and danger of armed threats in our state, and to pledge to do better going forward for everyone’s sake.
First, Sununu needs to stop allowing dangerous people easy access to firearms. He vetoed bills to close background-check loopholes and strengthen public safety laws. The first law he signed as governor repealed New Hampshire’s long-standing concealed carry licensing requirement.

Five years ago this month, Ammon Bundy led a 41-day armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge after protesting the return to federal prison of two Oregon ranchers convicted of setting fire to public land.
Bundy was acquitted of all charges after his arrest on allegations of conspiracy and impeding federal employees through intimidation, threat or force.
