Dalin leads five way sprint for Vendee glory

French skipper Charlie Dalin is expected to be the first to cross the finish line at the end of the solo round-the-world Vendee Globe on Wednesday but that is no guarantee that he will win the epic race.
The 36-year-old is leading a five-boat sprint for the line at Les Sables d Olonne in Brittany, northern France, and is expected to arrive on Wednesday evening after 80 days and 28,000 often hazardous miles at sea.
But the result is complicated by the fact that two of them Boris Herrmann and Yannick Bestaven were awarded time bonuses to be given after the race for joining the search and rescue for Kevin Escoffier after his boat broke in two in the south Atlantic.

French sailor Charlie Dalin was the first competitor to cross the finish line in the Vendee Globe round-the-world race on Wednesday but there was no guarantee he will be crowned the winner.
Dalin, on board Apivia, completed the epic race in 80 days, six hours, 15 minutes and 47 seconds, arriving at the French port of Les Sables-d Olonne shortly after 1935GMT.
However, Germany s Boris Herrmann (SeaExplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco) and France s Yannick Bestaven (Maitre coq IV) are still in the running for the title.

The margin of victory on this Vendée Globe may be down to minutes rather than hours. And while there seems to be a more remote chance that the actual winner will be decided on corrected time â after time compensation for being involved in the rescue of stricken skipper Kevin Escoffier â the projected time margins for the podium places are extremely tight.
The closest margin in recent editions was when François Gabart won the 2012-13 Vendée Globe by 3hrs and 17 minutes from Armel Le Cléacâh.
