Hospitalizations Hospitalizations continue seeing high levels of COVID-19 patients across the state, as local levels dip from recent all-time highs. Statewide, North Carolina reports 3,192 COVID-19 hospitalizations as of Dec. 27. The state reports 366 confirmed positive patients admitted in the previous 24 hours. At Mission Health, there are currently 125 lab-confirmed COVID-19 patients across five area hospitals, reports spokeswoman Nancy Lindell. That s a slight drop from pre-Christmas highs, but still a much higher rate than previous levels in the pandemic. 

Buncombe County Goes Further Than State On New COVID Restrictions For Indoor Dining & Gatherings

Buncombe County board chair Brownie Newman speaks at a press briefing Wednesday afternoon Buncombe County will lower capacity limits for indoor dining and gatherings at the beginning of January, as COVID-19 cases continue to increase in the county at greater levels. On January 2nd, the capacity for indoor dining at restaurants will go to 30% from its current 50%, and the limit on indoor gatherings involving people from outside your household will drop from ten to two.  Both are stricter than current state limits.  County board chair Brownie Newman made the announcement in a Facebook Live broadcast Wednesday afternoon, saying the new regulations won t go into effect for ten days to allow businesses to plan for them.  Outdoor dining capacity limits are not impacted by the new restrictions.

Matt Bush / Blue Ridge Public Radio (12/27 12:15 p.m.) North Carolina has reported 516,828 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, an increase of 2,898 from the day before.  3,123 people are currently hospitalized (a new high), an increase of 100 from the day before.  6,549 have died from COVID-19 in the state, an increase of 23 from the day before.  In the 13 North Carolina counties in Blue Ridge Public Radio s listening area, there are 25,402 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 407 deaths, an increase of 155 cases and 0 deaths from the day before.
