Darfur displaced suffer from severe food crisis

February 27 - 2021 NYALA (Cost of Hunger in Africa) In an interview with Radio Dabanga on Friday, Saleh Eisa, one of the leaders of the displaced in Kalma camp near Nyala, capital of South Darfur, said that the most prominent challenge currently facing the displaced in Darfur camps is an acute shortage of food. The World Food Programme (WFP) launched a policy for distributing food rations in August 2017 in which the number of Kalma camp residents eligible for food rations was reduced from 163,000 to 39,551, a reduction to 25 per cent of the food aid that was available before. The reduction, which was made “at the behest of the former regime [under Omar Al Bashir] before it fell,” has created a lack of food security in Kalma camp, according to Mohamed.

Peace Shield Forces also deployed in North Darfur as attacks continue

February 2 - 2021 TAWILA / GENEVA The Peace Shield Forces will consist of RSF troops (SUNA) On Sunday, one person was killed, another wounded, and three kidnapped in two separate attacks in Tawila locality, North Darfur. The North Darfur State Security Committee will deploy the Peace Shield Forces in certain localities to deal with the lack of security. Experts from the UN Human Rights Council called on the Sudanese government to take urgent action to protect civilians in Darfur. Witness Hasan Adam told Radio Dabanga that gunmen with cars and camels attacked the village of Barakarou in Tawila, injuring Mohieldin Suleiman (42) and kidnapping Yusef Hamid (18), Yahya Idris (22), and Abdelbaqi Hamed (30). They were forced into a vehicle at gunpoint and taken to an unknown location.

South Darfur governor grants additional powers to military forces after tribal fighting

January 21 - 2021 NYALA / KHARTOUM Rizeigat tribesmen in North Darfur (Albert González Farran for UNAMID) On Tuesday, Mousa Mahdi, the wali (governor) of South Darfur, confirmed that the state’s security committee granted additional security powers to the military forces deployed in the south of the state. They are now allowed to use force to control the security situation in the region, in the aftermath of the armed conflict between the Rizeigat and Fallata tribes. During his visit to the area where Tuesday’s events took place, Mousa Mahdi announced that the state security committee had issued strict directives to military commanders to arrest those involved in fuelling the conflict.
