Gov. Wolf reiterates commitment to phasing out PA s gas tax, appoints new bipartisan commission to develop funding recommendations

HARRISBURG, Pa. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf on Friday reiterated his commitment to phase out the state s gas tax, which he said is becoming an unreliable source for funding Pennsylvania’s vast transportation network.
To make this possible and to further address the state’s transportation funding needs, the governor signed an Executive Order establishing the Transportation Revenue Options Commission, which will develop comprehensive funding recommendations for Pennsylvania’s large and aging infrastructure.
On March 9, Allegheny County Council passed a bill that would require organizations that employ more than 25 people to provide paid sick days to employees in Allegheny County. These medium and large businesses and employers would need to provide at least five days of paid sick days to employees. This was amended from the original proposal, which mirrored the city of Pittsburgh’s legislation, and would have required employers with 15 workers or more to offer up to five days of paid sick time, and employers with fewer than 15 workers to offer up to three days of paid sick time. Independent contractors, unionized construction workers, seasonal employees, and state and federal workers would also be excluded from the requirements.

The number of inmates at Allegheny County Jail who are positive for covid-19 has doubled in the last week.
As of Sunday, 76 inmates were positive for the novel coronavirus, with another 27 tests pending, according to the county’s website.
Also on Monday, six pods at the jail were in full isolation, while another nine were operating under quarantine, according to an email obtained by the Tribune-Review.
Shaun Conroy, 31, of Homestead, is a pod worker at the jail. He believes he contracted the virus from a correctional officer who came to work sick two days in a row. During those shifts, Conroy said the officer looked pale and coughed repeatedly with her mask down.
