The biggest percentage for The Mining City is technology and one of the top-rated STEM schools in the country, Montana Tech, as well as some of the big employers in the area could be a reason.
âA lot of it does stem from you know Montana Tech, NorthWestern Energy, our hospital and then the one that wasnât on the list is Montana Resources, the mine here in town,â Joseph Willauer, executive director of Butte Local Development Corporation said. âI canât speak to actual available jobs from those companies, but they are our largest employers and paying some of the best wages in our community.â

“I think Butte is going to be the place to be and a very, very special place, and it is already in my mind a special community, and we are set for some amazing, amazing things,” said Karen Byrnes in a conversation about all the recent purchases of quite a few of Butte’s historic buildings.
Karen Byrnes is the Community Development Director for Butte-Silver Bow. She was born and raised here and has an intrinsic passion for this beautifully unique city. She attended local schools and graduated from Butte High in 1990. Her college career took her to Montana State University for one quarter but then headed right back to Butte. “I got my degree from Montana Technological University in business,” said Karen. She later went back to school and in 2000 earned her master’s degree in business administration.

BUTTE - Butteâs historic Uptown area is so unique economic leaders are developing a plan to help it thrive into the future.
âThereâs nothing else like Uptown, Butte, I mean, you walk out the door of our building, it is the coolest, most unique urban area of anywhere in Montana,â said Butte Local Development Corporation Director Joe Willauer.
Next month, the city will host two public Zoom meetings to get feedback from the public and business owners in the historic district that intersects at Park and Main streets. The city wants to know what it can do to enhance this important area.
