Agamiing Drive and Sunset Drive selected as new names to replace Colonization Road in Fort Frances, Ont

Posted: May 11, 2021 2:15 PM ET | Last Updated: May 11 Two new names have been chosen to replace Colonization Road in Fort Frances, Ont., as of Monday night, marking the end of a long consultation process among the town and its residents. The east section of the road will be renamed Agamiing Drive, Anishinaabemowin for at the shore , while the west section of the road will be renamed Sunset Drive. Tonight, council took a step toward building a more inclusive Fort Frances. We did that by replacing symbols of systemic racism with signposts of our commitment to reconciliation, and of the vital role Indigenous people will play in our path forward as a community, reads a written statement from town councillor Douglas Judson, issued Monday night.

Art to spark awareness of MMIWG2S+

Staff writer kkellar@fortfrances.com A new art installation in the area is aiming to spark conversation and awareness around an important social issue. In a partnership between Binesiwag Centre for Wellness and Seven Generations Education Institute (SGEI), a large piece of art in the form of a traditional jingle dancer is being installed on the grounds of SGEI’s Fort Frances campus and will remain there for the rest of the month, hopefully inspiring those who pass by to ask questions and further their understanding of the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S+) individuals in Canada.

Northland Foundation launches Indigenous-led grant program

Northland Foundation launches Indigenous-led grant program By Jana Hollingsworth, Star Tribune April 19, 2021 8:39pm Text size Copy shortlink: A new Duluth-based Northland Foundation grant program, Maada ookiing, aims to finance some of that volunteer work. Built so that representatives from area tribal nations not foundation staff decide who is awarded money, Maada ookiing translates to distribution in Ojibwe. Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded three times a year to individuals or informal groups starting May 1. The idea is to award grassroots efforts as opposed to nonprofits and ensure that proposals are viewed from an Indigenous perspective. This first round, $25,000 has been set aside to award to people within the foundation s service area.

On Monday, the Northland Foundation announced a new program to partner with the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and other tribal nations and Indigenous communities in northeastern Minnesota. The program features grassroots grants up to $2,500 to individuals and informal groups rather than nonprofit organizations, school districts or governments — a unique offering in the world of philanthropy. The eligible geographic service area includes the Bois Forte Band, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. In addition, the grants are available to individuals and groups in St. Louis, Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching and Lake counties.
