(AP) - Authorities say a homeless camp caught fire underneath a bridge in Eugene early Wednesday, leading multiple propane tanks to explode and destroy the tents and possessions of people living there. Noelle Wade, who had been staying there for three weeks said she woke up in the middle of the night to flames engulfing her tent before other camp residents pulled her out, The Register-Guard reported. Located under the Ferry Street Bridge, residents say more than a half dozen people had been living there.

A fire at a homeless camp on Club Road under the Ferry Street Bridge set off propane tanks early Wednesday morning, closing the bridge for a short time. According to Eugene Police, officers responded to calls about a large fire under the bridge at 3:41 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found the fire and saw several explosions. People were running from the fire and into the street.  According to Eugene-Springfield Fire, a campfire that was too close to the camper s property set off 15 propane tanks located at the camp. Witnesses reported seeing heavy black smoke billowing out from under the bridge and hearing loud popping sounds.

Strides For Social Justice App Offers A Tour Of Black History In Eugene

1:04 KLCC s Melorie Begay reports on the recently released Strides for Social Justice app that offers users a tour of Eugene highlighting Black History along the way. This is a broadcast version of the story that aired Feb. 24. Last year, when the Eugene Marathon was canceled because of the pandemic, both PeaceHealth and Eugene Marathon brain-stormed alternative solutions.  During that time George Floyd was murdered and all of the subsequent protests occurred and then the idea began to take form, said Marcy Marshall, the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications at PeaceHealth. We were really impacted deeply, personally, we wanted to see if we could collaborate on a program that really focused on social justice.

Lane County Acknowledges Ferry Street Village

On the second day of Black History Month, Lane County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution that acknowledges the destruction of Lane County’s first Black neighborhood, commits county public works projects to follow the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and memorializes the history of the Ferry Street Village.  At the Feb. 2 Lane County Board of County Commissioners’ meeting, Director of Public Works Dan Hurley presented the item to commissioners, prefacing that he has lived in the area for most of his life but hadn’t heard of the bulldozing of the Ferry Street Village until a co-worker shared the article “Civic Unity Comes to Lane County” by Mike Wolfe, published in the
