BOISE, Idaho A milestone in the effort to save a species: In May of 2020 biologists with the Peregrine Fund trapped and tagged the 1,000th California Condor hatched since the recovery program started in 1995.
The population of the magnificent scavengers now numbers more than 500 in the world, with more than half of those flying free in the wild. That s up from only 22 condors in 1982.

On Sunday, January 10th, as an XXL swell peaked at Maverick’s, the initial forerunners from the same storm manifested some 1,500 miles away at Baja Mexico’s legendary big-wave spot: Killers, Todos Santos. Though the nearshore buoys were already slam-dancing well before dawn on Monday, January 11th, the action was slow as a high tide forced a two-hour lull.
By the time the tide bottomed out mid-afternoon, Killers was pumping. The same high pressure system that kept the storm away from Maverick’s also helped ensure a clean arrival here in Mexico for the long-period energy, which wasn’t getting jammed up by any local, short-period swell. The sun was shining and the winds were light and variable all day long. Fresh out of the brine after a demented dream run at Maverick

FK Rod Ends returns as USMTS Hard Charger sponsor in 2021
Now entering their fourth season of supporting USMTS competitors, FK Rod Ends will once again award $100 bill to the driver passing the most cars in the feature race at every event on the 2021 campaign for the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s.
With American-made quality and dependability, the Official Rod Ends of the USMTS came onto the scene more than 36 years ago and quickly won over their customers with fair pricing and plenty of inventory.
While the industrial market struggled to get product from the old standbys, the racing market embraced a supplier that would maintain inventory throughout the limited season.

Two outdoor Oregon holiday traditions will still happen this year, but in a do-it-yourself way.
Diane Navarrete is with Oregon State Parks. She said thousands of gray whales travel south to Baja Mexico from mid-December to mid-January. “We won’t be able to have our volunteers that we normally have stationed at the 24 whale watching spots along the coast, she said, but that doesn’t mean visitors can’t go out and watch whales on their own.”
Navarrete expects people will follow COVID-19 guidelines, as they did during last spring’s on-your-own whale watch. She added State Parks will be free on January 1st as usual, but without ranger-led hikes. Many parks will instead post suggested routes for the yearly First Day Hikes.
