NMS Unveils System to Display Nairobi Matatu Routes [PHOTOS]

Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director General Mohammed Badi has unveiled a new system that will be used to control bus termini in Nairobi.
Badi made the announcement after a night inspection of the Green Park Terminus on March 15, 2021, accompanied by Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and various heads of directorates and contractors.

The system will control the movement of matatus in an orderly manner showing which vehicle has been assigned to which route and boarding time.

Nairobi Matatu Operators are up in arms over the move by Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) to ban Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) in the Central Business District (CBD).
The matatus are asking the government to issue Saccos with the number of BRT vehicles to purchase in order to allow them access CBD when the matatu ban will be enforced.
This comes after Swedish automotive giant Scania entered the competition for the provision of Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) services by unveiling a 91-passenger bus.

“In the City Decongestion Strategy, commuter buses will be available for passengers who will prefer not to walk from the termini to the city centre and vice-versa,” said NMS in a statement.
It added that commuters can also use the Non-Motorised Transport Corridors (NMT) which have both cycle ways and walk ways to and from the CBD.
According to NMS, the city will soon start using a digital platform for rides to and from terminuses which will be introduced by NMS outside CBD.
NMS is set to integrate an electronic system in the terminuses outside the city centre that will keep matatu users informed on the time last mile buses will be at the different pick up stages.
