Cyclone Yasa destroyed at least half of the kava crop in one of Fiji s main growing regions according to a prominent grower and exporter.
The country s second biggest island Vanua Levu bore the brunt of the category five storm when it struck a fortnight ago.
That is where Praveen Narayan manages Green Gold Kava Fiji which farms, processes and exports kava from Savusavu. There s 50 to 60 per cent damage of the plants in the ground, he said. We will survive . Fiji is one country that is always resilient.
Mr Praveen said the extent of the damage is likely to cause a sharp rise in the price of kava, as was seen in the aftermath of Cyclone Winston in 2016.
