Egypt deserves unconditional support from the European Union as it has proven that illegal migration can be halted at sea as well as on land, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s foreign minister, said after talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukhry, on Tuesday.
By closing its maritime border six years ago, Egypt has since shown the falsity of the claim of Brussels officials and pro-migration politicians that migration waves cannot be contained along sea routes, he told a press conference in Cairo.
“Egypt is doing a great service for the whole of Europe, especially now that illegal migration involves major health risks. For this reason it deserves every possible assistance from the European Union,” he said.
EC Launches Infringement Procedure Against Hungary for Flouting CJEU Ruling on NGOs
The European Commission has launched an infringement procedure against Hungary for flouting a ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union concerning its law on civil organisations.
In a “letter of formal notice” to Hungary, the EC called on Hungary to implement the CJEU’s ruling from June 2020, when the court ruled that Hungarian regulation of foreign-funded NGOs violated EU rules on the free movement of capital as well as the fundamental right to protection of personal data and freedom of association.
A second infringement procedure was launched against Hungary for voting against the EU’s standpoint at the United Nations Committee on Narcotic Drugs (CND), on the WHO’s recommendations on cannabis and related substances. Member states are obliged under EU law to align themselves with the EU’s standpoint on such matters, the EC said.

Szijjártó: Hungary, Poland Continue to Oppose Migrant Settlement Quotas
Hungary and Poland continue to oppose “EU-sponsored migrant settlement quotas” because they believe repeated waves of migration pose a health risk in Europe, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s foreign minister, said in Warsaw on Thursday.
The European Union faces two challenges, he said, referring to “the extremely slow acquisition of vaccines” and “the health risk implied by imminent waves of migration”, he told MTI after a one-day visit to Poland.
Szijjártó slammed “efforts in the EU to impose mandatory migrant quotas on member states”.
“Allowing hundreds of thousand non-vaccinated people to enter Europe would give a fresh impetus to the pandemic”, he said. Meanwhile, he added, vaccine deliveries to Europe “are much slower than expected”.
