Bangladesh reports another new Covid variant
Scientists have identified another new variant of novel coronavirus in Bangladesh with potentially worrying mutations.
Known as B.1.525, the variant was first detected in the UK on December 15 and Nigeria in December last year.
According to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), eight cases of this variant have so far been found in Bangladesh by different laboratories.
Of them, six were detected by the scientists at Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, one by the scientists at Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives and another by the scientists at Child Health Research Foundation.

Since the beginning of the second wave of pandemic in early March, Bangladesh has witnessed a jump in the daily coronavirus infection at an alarming rate. Hospital beds and ICUs have been occupied within a short span of time. Death rates are skyrocketing. UK and South African strains have been detected in the samples from the travellers. No alternative to practicing science: Hasan

DHAKA, March 13, 2021 (BSS)- Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said there is no alternative to practicing science in facing the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution.
“Bangladesh is moving forward to cope with the world in regard to the fourth revolution though the country lagged behind in the last three revolutions,” he said, addressing an international conference on science and technology.
Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research organized the conference marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury addressed the conference as special guest.
