DHAKA, Dec 16, 2020 (BSS) – The country today celebrated the 50th Victory Day recalling moments that had marked emergence of Dhaka as the free capital of independent Bangladesh with occupation Pakistani troops’ unconditional surrender.
The ceremonial 31 gun salutes heralded the day as troops fired artillery shots from the National Parade Square while President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Liberation War Martyrs.
Military secretaries to the President and the Premier placed wreaths on their behalf at the National Memorial at suburban Savar in the early morning ceremony while the COVID 19 prevented their physical presence at the scene.

Journalist leaders at a rally arranged to protest the vandalism of the sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Monday said that attacking on the sculpture of Bangabandhu in non-communal Bangladesh means attacking on the entire country and the constitution.
The Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) held the rally in front of the demolished sculpture of Bangabandhu at five intersections in Kushtia this afternoon to protest the vandalism of the sculpture.
President of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Quddus Afrad presided over the rally.

The notices were served on them on Monday, said BNP s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. Shawkat Mahmud must respond in writing to the party s central office within 72 hours and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed within five days explaining why organisational action will not be taken against them over the allegations that they misled party leaders and workers by using the party s name, he said.
The charges levelled at Hafiz Uddin, a retired major, include dividing up the party to become its secretary general , failure to carry out the responsibilities handed by the top brass, particularly the task of monitoring Krishak Dal, according to the notice.
