E-Mail DETROIT (Feb. 22, 2021) - Henry Ford Hospital has been re-certified by The Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the highest distinction of its kind which recognizes hospitals that have the ability to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases. An independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 22,000 healthcare organizations and programs in U.S., The Joint Commission conducted a rigorous review of more than 130 elements of performance, including quality measurements and guidelines, before awarding the re-certification, which Henry Ford Hospital first earned in 2016. Geisinger researchers find sex is not an independent risk factor for stroke mortality

E-Mail DANVILLE, Pa. - An analysis of data collected from patients treated for ischemic stroke at Geisinger shows no disparity in outcomes based solely on sex. Various studies have suggested that women are disproportionately affected by stroke and may have poorer stroke outcomes. Women have a longer life expectancy than men and, therefore, likely have an increased lifetime risk of stroke. Women tend to be older than men at the time of stroke and have a higher pre-stroke degree of disability or dependence in their daily activities, which may contribute to worse outcomes. Rural populations may also have a higher risk of stroke based on a greater incidence of conditions like hypertension and poorly controlled diabetes.

Three NGMC campuses certified as Primary Stroke Centers

The Barrow, Braselton and Gainesville campuses of Northeast Georgia Medical Center were recently certified as Primary Stroke Centers by DNV GL Healthcare. NGMC Gainesville earned recertification as a Primary Stroke Center, while NGMC Barrow and Braselton were certified for the first time. Prior to being certified as Primary Stroke Centers, the Barrow and Braselton campuses were designated Remote Treatment Stroke Centers by the Georgia Department of Public Health. Primary Stroke Center certification means that a hospital can provide treatment and therapy to a broad range of stroke conditions and admit patients to a designated stroke unit specifically assigned for stroke care. Primary Stroke Centers also act as a resource center for other facilities in the region, serving as a main transfer site for stabilized stroke patients.
