EDITOR’S NOTE: Of second chances

As we are coping with the second wave of
COVID-19 and its consequent ramifications on our lives euphemistically termed ‘the new normal’ cutting corners and downsizing have become mainstay operations. Indeed, for over a year now, they have been topics of hushed discussions at the water fountains in corporate offices and within the privacy of our living rooms.
The wily virus has snatched away many of our loved ones, just as we suffered job losses thanks to businesses shutting down and corporates cutting back. A few years ago high net worth individuals, comprising a sizeable section of the upper middleclass, rode the crest on disposable incomes all of it taken away in a jiffy. Social media posts of lavish weddings and fish-faced selfies at St Tropez or atop Mt Kilimanjaro morphed into images of one-pot meals, baking sourdough bread and whipping up foamy coffee at home.

By: Jemima Kelly We are in the midst of a new mania. A species of digital asset as unsexy-sounding as the non-fungible token or the only marginally sexier NFT is taking over the front pages, social media and, sadly for me, my life.
Over the past two weeks, I have been added to a WhatsApp group named crypto NFTs ; been invited to two chats about the tokens on Clubhouse; and had three friends call and ask me to try to explain this strange new phenomenon. On top of this are the dozens of NFT-flavoured press releases thwarting my increasingly vain attempts to reach inbox zero.

By: Siobhan Harvey And what is my definition of feminism? Chilean author Isabel Allende writes in her new memoir, The Soul of a Woman. It is not what we have between our legs but what we have between our ears. Laconic and astute, this quote illustrates the wider work, which is a bricolage of intimate reflections, family histories and feminist discourses. It s a powerful offering, one made more impactful by Allende s ability to condense her rich personal stories and philosophies into a very readable 140 pages.

Thumbs up for Kev
I would like to say how much I enjoy reading Kevin Page s article in the Saturday Chronicle each week. His is the first page I turn to as he invariably makes me laugh every Saturday morning.
To read that he has at last been able to secure a job was great and I would like to congratulate him on his perseverance and wish him well for the future.
