A tribute to John Barry on the Bardavon marquee in Poughkeepsie this fall. As the music and arts columnist for the Poughkeepsie Journalsince 2000, John Barry s byline is about as familiar to Hudson Valley residents as the characteristic hum their tires make when they drive over the Mid-Hudson Bridge. But last month, after 20 years, Barry s editorial hum came to a halt at the publication when he retired from New York State s oldest newspaper. We reached out to him via email to see how he s faring following his two decades of community service. The home was the scene of the gruesome murder of prominent businessman John William Schatz in 1931. The story reads like a 1930s Hollywood script rather than a gruesome murder in an affluent neighborhood in the City of Poughkeepsie. But the 1931 slaying of prominent businessman John William Schatz as he slept in the bedroom of his home on Garfield Place was a shocking reality for the community. The fashionable house, which was built in 1853 for shipping magnate Avis Barney, featured elegant Italian plaster work, solid marble fireplace mantles, and other quality details. It was purchased by Schatz when he relocated from New Haven, Connecticut, to Poughkeepsie in 1918.
