California wildfire advances as heat wave blankets US West SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Firefighters struggled to contain an exploding Northern California wildfire under blazing temperatures as another heat wave hits the U.S. West this weekend, prompting an excessive heat warning for inland and desert areas. On Friday, Death Valley National Park in California recorded a staggering high of 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54 Celsius) and could reach the same high on Saturday. If verified, the 130-degree reading would be the hottest high recorded there since July 1913, when the same Furnace Creek desert area hit 134 F (57 C), considered the highest reliably measured temperature on Earth.

Wildfire pushing California toward the brink of blackouts Wildfire pushing California toward . A wildfire raging uncontrollably across southern Oregon has knocked out three electrical lines so critical to the stability of grids in the western U.S. that California has warned of rotating blackouts and Nevada faced a power emergency. The fast-moving Bootleg fire crippled a key transmission system known as the California Oregon Intertie that the Golden State has depended on for years for electricity imports. Making matters worse: The takedown of the intertie has had a knock-on effect on another key import hub known as the Pacific DC Intertie that brings in electricity from the Pacific Northwest, California s grid operator said in a media briefing Saturday. Power supplies to the area covered by the grid have been reduced by as much as 3,500 megawatts because of the fire.

30 Million People Under Excessive Heat Warnings In West As 300,000 Acres Burn In Six States

(The Center Square) – More than 30 million people in Western states are under excessive heat warnings and advisories Monday, with multiple cities hitting record-high triple-digit temperatures. As of Sunday, more than 300,000 acres have burned in six western states. In Oregon, the Bootleg Fire burned 143,607 acres and is zero percent contained. It “will see the potential for extreme growth today,” the National Weather Service in Medford, Oregon, tweeted. “We are seeing doubling in size of the fire every 24 hours,” Oregon State Fire Marshal Gert Zoutendijk said. “Basically every ember that falls will start a new fire.” The fire shut down three major power transmission lines used in California, responsible for supplying 10% of the state’s energy. As of Monday, the three power lines were still down, officials said. California officials issued a “flex alert,” urging Californians to conserve energy. Residents are asked to avoid using major electricity-using appliance
