NJ Transit OKs $63M purchase of diesel buses, as activists clamor for electric

It’s the second-to-last major cruiser bus purchase before the agency has replaced all of its older buses, some that are up to 20 years old and unreliable, said Kevin Corbett, NJ Transit CEO.
But, transit advocates question why the agency is buying hundreds of diesel buses when Gov. Phil Murphy signed a law in January requiring it to move toward purchasing zero-emissions buses. Some environmentalists and advocates asked if the purchase meets the intent of the recent law, which requires 10% of new bus purchases by 2024 to be zero emission vehicles. That increases to 50% by 2026, and 100% of new bus purchases must be zero emissions by 2032.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ Middletown seeks to build a car canopy with solar panels on top of it at the NJ Transit station parking lot on Church Street.
On Feb. 5, Middletown applied to the NJ Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to build the car canopy/solar farm. If the BPU approves it, Middletown says it will have to either trim or entirely remove about 20 trees from around the train station parking lot so they don t block the sun.
This represents about .65 acres of trees from the seven-acre train station parking lot site. The canopy will cover about half of the train station parking lot.

Somerset County Opposes Tennessee Gas Compressor Station
Last night Somerset County passed a resolution
(see attached) that opposes the West Milford and Wantage Compressor Station that Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company plans to build. Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company’s proposal includes modification and expansion of the Wantage Compressor Station in Sussex County, New Jersey, including installation of one Solar Titan 130 turbine with an ISO rating of 20,500 hp and auxiliary facilities. This is part of TGP’s East 300 Upgrade that also includes a new compressor station in the Highlands Region of West Milford.

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Joe Testa, New Providence resident and Sustainability Committee member, has been elected by the Executive Board of the National Council of Club Leaders (CCL) of the National Sierra Club as its Chairman. The Council of Club Leaders represents each of the 63 chapters of the Sierra Club across the nation.
Testa said he is “honored that the CCL elected me as the Chair.” Testa continued, “I have a seat with the Board of Directors and on many national Board committees, and, am responsible for… bringing local Chapter and Group concerns to the attention of our Club’s national leadership.”
