SHELTON Renovation work on the Derby-Shelton Bridge is moving forward, as the state has tapped a contractor for the project which should begin by April 1.
The $6.3 million contract was awarded to Mohawk Northeast, Inc. Construction. The bid was almost $1.5 million below its pre-bid estimate on the work, completion of which should be December 2023.

Cod fishing at Block Island is up and down. It might be worth traveling to Connecticut for holdover stripers or stocked trout.

Eric, at Rooster Sport Fishing in New Shoreham, says he is not running any trips for the next few weeks, but he recently picked away at a few cod, ranging from 24 to 26 inches. He and his friend were using Norweigan jigs and fresh clams.

Max, at Fisherman’s World in Norwalk, says holdover striper reports continue to come in from the Housatonic River. He says the fishing is steady and anglers are using Al Gag’s Lures and Lunker City Slug-Gos paired with jigheads, ranging from 3/8 to 3/4-ounces. Herring fishing remains slow in Norwalk, Bridgeport, and South Benson Marina. Switching to freshwater; the west branch of Farmington River is producing rainbow and brown trout on jigs and egg sacs. Despite the slow reports, some of the better options are holdover striped bass at the Housatonic River, cod at Block Island, and trout fishing at the Farmington.

Inland Wetlands Commission continues hearing on plan
The Fulling Mill Brook flows along Prospect Street in Naugatuck on Jan. 7. An application to build a commercial building on the undeveloped land shown the brook is before the Inland Wetlands Commission. The proposal includes building a culvert and road over the brook. –ANDREAS YILMA
NAUGATUCK A proposal to build a commercial building on an undeveloped parcel of land on Prospect Street is before the Inland Wetlands Commission.
The applicants, Magdi Bebawi and Onsi Tawadros of Waterbury, are proposing to build a 10,000-square-foot, one story building with a parking lot on a 13.95-acre property on Prospect Street between Maple Hill Road and Union City Road. The property’s address is listed as 0 Prospect St.
