Von der Leyen says EU must listen to criticism
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has said that the rolling Future of Europe conference, launched on Sunday to coincide with Europe Day, must not become “an intellectual policy exercise or a closed political compromise.” Speaking in Strasbourg, von der Leyen said participants must be honest enough to recognise that the conference is “not a panacea” and that they should listen to criticism. French president Emmanuel Macron, in what Politico called a “long, meandering speech”, urged a strengthening of EU level decision-making in light of the coronavirus pandemic. “We need to beef up our common capacity because it is at the European level that we’ll come up with the relevant response,” The Guardian cited him saying.
