EUGENE Tim DeRuyter’s defense made its public debut during Oregon’s first spring scrimmage and it stood out in its aggression, the amount of rotating personnel on the second and third levels and for the volume of less heralded players who made big plays.
There are nuanced differences to DeRuyter’s defense compared with that of his predecessor, Andy Avalos, particularly on the edges.

Just over a month ago, 247Sports four-star linebacker Niuafe Tuihalamaka decommitted from the USC Trojans, reopening his recruitment.
On Monday, the 6-foot-2, 238-pound ‘backer, out of Bishop Alemany High School (Mission Hills, California), eliminated the Trojans altogether, announcing a top five of Arizona State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Stanford and Texas:
Tuihalamaka is rated the nation’s No. 68 overall prospect and the No. 3 inside linebacker by 247Sports, who projects him as a Day 2 NFL draft pick.

After signing a pair of five-star linebackers in 2020 – Noah Sewell (Utah) and Justin Flowe (California) – the position wasn’t a particular need for Oregon.
But that didn’t stop the Ducks from locking up Lebanon High School star and All-American Bowl selection
Keith Brown early in the process.
Once rated the No. 1 inside linebacker nationally, Oregon’s lone in-state pledge is the No. 4 player at his position on Rivals - without a senior season to showcase his growth and development.
