I am not, by and large, a gambler. I’ve never been to Las Vegas. I’ve played card games at casinos like twice in my life and I’ve never bet on sports other than maybe $100, lifetime, on horse races.
Still, I find gambling oddly compelling. There’s a cocktail inside my brain that mixes analytical tendencies with a strong ego that leads me to believe, despite all the conflicting evidence, that yes, I probably would be a big winner were I to dive in to sports betting.

As the late, great Mac Miller’s birthday came and went just over a week ago, the Pittsburgh native’s lyrics have been stuck on repeat in my head. In particular, the beginning of the first verse in his 2018 hit ‘2009’ a simple one-liner:
you’ve got to jump in to swim.
Simple, right? But sometimes even the most simplistic saying hits the spot. Nothing good happens without that first leap of faith. And that leap isn’t always so easy. That’s something that we could all do with remembering from time-to-time. If you needed a human reminder, there is one diving on the floor for loose balls and flying for alley-oop slams on our screens every other night. That ball of energy is Jarred Vanderbilt, and he had to wait in a long line before he could dive into the waters of his NBA career.

Though the current member of NBA G League Ignite played high school ball in Las Vegas, Nix grew up and was born in Anchorage, Alaska (yes, Alaska). Not only did he come to the mainland to put his name on the map professionally, he’s also here to prove that the basketball scene out in Alaska is legit.
“I think [basketball in Alaska is] underrated, underrated a lot,” Nix said. “Since we’re close to Canada all the way up there, people think we can’t compete with anybody. But, there’s actually a few players there that I compete with, that can’t compete with players in Alaska.”
