A Norweigan woman has described how her mother escaped the clutches of the Nazis by virtue of being born in Newry.
Elsie Mendel survived the holocaust after bravely standing up the Nazis who arrived at her home in November 1942, telling them they could not take her due to her British citizenship.
Her daughter, Lill Fanny Saether shared her mother s story to mark Holocaust Memorial Day today.
Lill s family ended up in Newry after leaving Russia and her grandparents married in the town in 1906.
Florrie and Joseph Mendel lived at 7 Kilmorey Terrace and had three children, including Lill s mother Elsie.
The Mendel family moved to Trondheim, Norway in 1911 when Elsie was just two-years-old, before eventually settling in Oslo in the early 1930 s
