A kayaker was rescued by firefighters after overturning off the Fairfield County coast and becoming stranded in the cold waters.
The incident took place around 1:10 p.m., Friday, April 9 in Norwalk Harbor.
The Norwalk fire department’s marine unit 238 responded to a call for distress and located the victim at 1:24 p.m. in the area of Round Beach, clinging to the side of another person’s kayak, said Norwalk Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael P. McCallum.
The victim was quickly pulled to safety by firefighters and treated for early stages of hypothermia.
The victim had reportedly been in the water for 20 minutes, after capsizing his kayak. Water temperatures in Norwalk Harbor are currently in the vicinity of 40 degrees, McCallum said.

James J. Keenan, III
James J. Keenan, III, Coach , died on December 23, 2020, due to complications of a stroke. He was 60 years old. He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen of 34 years; his daughter Casey, siblings: Thomas Keenan, Patrick Keenan (Min), Michael Keenan and Elizabeth Keenan Kish (Kurt), as well as several nieces and nephews.
After graduation from Fairfield University, Jim was self-employed at Game Plan Marketing and his biggest project and obsession was the annual Chowdafest. He also created the sister event, The Great Mac n Chili Challenge.
He was involved in numerous volunteer opportunities such as serving on the Board of the Friends of Sherwood Island and the Norwalk Seaport Association. Jim was one of the top volunteers for Food Rescue US, which was also the beneficiary of his Chowdafest charitable giving.

Robert Schuyler was born in Rhinebeck, New York in 1798, the grandson of American general Phillip Schuyler and nephew of the treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton. After graduating from Harvard he moved into steamboats, becoming president of the New York and Boston Transportation Company in 1838. In 1846 he founded R. & G. L. Schuyler, which invested in railroads. His career progressed rapidly and he soon became a major figure in the American rail industry: he was president of several railroads and involved with many others. As a result he became known as “America’s first railroad king”.
