Portland State University reunites popular duo for an uplifting message for the holidays

PORTLAND, Ore. You may remember the impromptu duet at Portland’s park blocks that went viral back in June. Professional opera singer Onry happened to walk by as Madisen Hallberg was recording the national anthem for Portland State University’s virtual commencement.
“Graduating during coronavirus is like just literally the most anticlimactic thing of all time,” said Hallberg on Wednesday.
This will give you all the feels.

Last summer, a video of a young woman on a Portland campus being spontaneously joined in her rendition of âThe Star-Spangled Bannerâ by a passerby became an internet sensation. The twoâMadisen Hallberg, who was recording the anthem for Portland State Universityâs virtual commencement ceremony, and Emmanuel âOnryâ Henreid, who sings with the Portland Operaâstruck a chord with hundreds of thousands of viewers amid nationwide protests for racial justice, and went on to appear on outlets local and national, including the Kelly Clarkson Show and the BBC News. (It was also one of our top arts and culture stories of the year.)
