All political gatherings, including the campaigns to amend parts of the 2010 Constitution, stand banned at least for the next 60 days, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Friday while announcing measures to combat the rising spread of Covid-19.
The guidelines include an extended curfew for 60 days, capping those allowed in places of worship, weddings and burial at 100. Burials, he said, should be done within 72 hours after one dies.
The ban on rallies has likely hit hard the campaigners for the Building Bridges Initiative Bill (BBI) – which is now undergoing public participation in anticipation of passing by the Houses of Parliament – and slow down Deputy President William Ruto’s campaign for next year’s presidential contest.

ODM leader Raila Odinga has crafted a new strategy that would reportedly offer stiff competition to other presidential aspirants in the upcoming 2022 general elections.
His allies said that he had resorted to forming a new coalition that would enable him to ascend to Presidency, pitting himself against Deputy President William Ruto and an expected coalition between party leaders Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Gideon Moi (KANU) and Moses Wetangula (Ford- Kenya).
Raila s new team comprises party leaders, Alfred Mutua (Maendeleo Chap Chap), Charity Ngilu (NARC), Kivutha Kibwana (Muungano Party), Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Hassan Joho - who has also declared his interest in running for the top seat.
