NAIROBI Ethiopia has received two bids for two new telecoms operating licenses that have advanced to the next stage to secure permission to operate in the Horn of Africa nation, said a senior advisor at the ministry of finance.
South Africa’s MTN has submitted one of the bids, while the other came from a consortium of Kenya’s Safaricom , Vodafone and Vodacom, Brook Taye, the senior advisor, told Reuters.

The United Kingdom’s CDC Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation are also part of the consortium, the ministry of finance said in a tweet.

NAIROBI (Reuters) -The death toll in clashes this month between Ethiopia s two largest ethnic groups, the Oromo and Amhara, in the northern Amhara region may be as high as 200, a senior official said on Sunday, up from previous reports of at least 50.
Residents and officials in Oromiya Special Zone, an area in Amhara with a majority Oromo population, and the town of Ataye said there were deadly clashes in the area on April 16.

NAIROBI Clashes between people belonging to Ethiopia’s two largest ethnic groups, the Oromo and Amhara, killed at least 18 people late last week, local officials said on Monday, the latest outbreak of violence ahead of national elections in June.
Political and ethnic violence has become a major challenge for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, whose political reforms have also emboldened regional powerbrokers after nearly three decades of iron-fisted government.

The Oromo are Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group and the Amhara are its second largest. The Amhara and Oromiya regions share a border and attacks on civilians from one ethnic group living on the other side of the border have been rising in recent months.
