The dream was always the same.
When Nayib Estefan and his wife, Lara, moved back to Miami in 2012 after 10 years in Los Angeles to raise their newborn son, he missed the repertory theaters in Hollywood where he had been able to watch cult movies he loved The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, John Waters comedies, Lamberto Bava s Demons projected on the big screen on 35mm film. I had only seen those movies on VHS, and I couldn t believe how great they looked, Estefan said. The Bookleggers Library was one of nine nonprofit beneficiaries of a $2.2 million investment by the Knight Foundation. Its staff includes, from left, Robert Colom, founder Nathaniel Sandler and Laura Monzon.
Nathaniel Sandler founded Bookleggers in 2012 out of his Miami Beach apartment, with the dream of opening his own public library.
His mission: To use books as a way of building community.
Since growing out of its original home space, the Bookleggers Library had a few incarnations, moving to Mana Contemporary Miami in 2018, then to its current home at Wynwood’s Bakehouse Art Complex in 2020. These moves allowed Sandler to host ever-expanding community gatherings.

What a dreadful year. We found ourselves having to tackle a whole new vocabulary and most of the words were enough to make even the most optimistic among us depressed. It all began in March with self-isolation , a horrible expression inferring you have become a hermit, hidden away, exiled, incommunicado, which in fact is exactly what we were.
Then we had social distancing or the length of three badgers as it was neatly interpreted in Wisconsin. Another expression we were greeted with was herd immunity which I never really understood. It wasn t long before the most commonly used words in this newspaper were postponed and cancelled .
