A USAID funded project, Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE) project, has held a dialogue session with the military, police, civil society organizations (CSOs), government, media, and other stakeholders as part of its dialogue series aimed at strengthening collaboration for safeguarding civic space in Nigeria.
The dialogue with the theme, “Safeguarding Civic Space”, which held on Wednesday in Lagos, stressed the need for key stakeholders to identify and develop action plans to address the nation’s shrinking civic space.
According to Lydia Odeh, the USAID-SCALE project Chief of Party, the dialogue will help participants to develop capacity for implementing efficient and effective policies that support transformational change and contribute to improving quality of life for Nigerians, and an open civic space enables them to pursue many roles.

Troops can’t be schooling when we’re in a war situation –Brigadier generals
Following intensified insurgency attacks across the country, particularly in the North, the Nigerian Army has recalled a large number of its personnel studying in civil institutions (universities and polytechnics) across the country, according to a leaked memo by the Nigerian Army Headquarters, Department of Army Training, Abuja.
In the memo dated May 11, the Nigerian Army also suspended the sponsorship of personnel in civil institutions with the exemption of students in the final year.

He was said to have battled an undisclosed illness for some time.
Joseph, his son, told NAN that he suffered a stroke and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

“Unfortunately, early this morning (Thursday), around 3.00am precisely, he breathed his last,” he said.
“His death comes as a rude shock to us as a family. We are going to miss his love and warm as a grandfather, father, brother, uncle and supporter.
“He was a general who had no bias mind as a detribalised Nigerian. He served this nation faithful and identified with all Nigerians and Africa as a continent.

Lieutenant General Joshua Dogonyaro, a former Chief of Defence Staff during the late General Sani Abacha’s regime, died on Thursday.
Born on September 12, 1940, in Vom, Plateau State, Dogonyaro was the officer that read the coup speech that ousted the then General Muhammadu Buhari as military ruler.
The coup brought in the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida junta on August 27, 1985.
Dogonyaro died at the Jos University Teaching Hospital where he was admitted after a brief illness. His remains have been deposited at the Air Force Hospital in Jos.
Dogoyaro was a member of the Langtang Mafia in Nigeria’s military circle. The clique comprises military men from Langtang, Plateau, who served or are still in the military.
Muslims shun COVID-19 protocols at Bauchi praying grounds

Despite appeals by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State to the people of his State to observe COVID-19 protocols, Muslims in Bauchi, the state capital, have flouted them, trooping out in their numbers to observe the two Rakaah Eid-el-Fitr prayers.
Mohammed had, in his goodwill message to mark this year’s celebration, warned people of the dangers of contracting COVID-19 and urged them to observe safety protocols like wearing face masks, hand washing and social-distancing.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is still around. I, therefore, appeal to you all to continue to observe the protocols of social distancing, wearing of facemasks and washing your hands wherever the need arises. You should also endeavour to take the vaccine against the pandemic,” the governor admonished.
