Breaking News | Nigeria: Gunmen Kidnap 22 in Niger State

A witness says the bandits stormed the village on motorbikes “and started shooting sporadically into the air”. Gunmen have kidnapped at least 19 persons in Ogu and Tegina communities in Niger State. According to a report by Channels Television, a resident of Ogu, Kamal Wayam, said the assailants stormed the village on motorbikes “and started shooting sporadically into the air”. The Sunday incident in Niger State is coming a few days after gunmen stormed a secondary school in Katsina State and abducted 333 students according to a figure given by the state government. According to a witness, the gunmen ransacked houses and took away valuables.

A source from Rafi Local Government who did not want his identity revealed confirmed the incident on Monday. He however could not give many details on the attacks and had to place telephone call to a resident in the affected community for more information. A source identified as Kamal Mamman Wayam from Ogu community, said the gunmen stormed Ogu on Sunday morning and started shooting into the air. According to Wayam, “The gunmen in their large numbers arrived Ogu on motorcycles. Before we knew what was happening, they started shooting into the air. “They ransacked peoples’ houses, and whatever valuable they could lay their hands on, they carted away. They also abducted six persons from Ogu. Four of the persons abducted were members of one day, while the other two were visitors to the community.”

Command nabs suspected ritual killers in Niger

Police nab mobile phone thieves in Niger

The suspects Shamsudeen Idris, 25; Masa’ud Danlami, 20; and Mohammed Isah, 17; all from the Bosso area, were apprehended by the intelligence operatives attached to the command, following a tip-off. PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects specialised in robbing people of handsets, motorcycles and other valuables. Our correspondent gathered that the suspects had been doing these for a while before they were apprehended by the police. Checks revealed that the suspects were usually armed with weapons and charms, with which they dispossessed their victims of their valuables.
