And now the legend grows after a claim on social media by someone calling himself Theodorus Sander that he had been led by an “evil spirit” to destroy the stone! That aside, people have taken to social media to express their outrage with various theories being proffered. The Popping Stone in the Irthing Gorge near the village of Gilsland, where Scottish author Sir Walter Scott allegedly proposed to Charlotte Carpenter in 1797. It is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest The landmark consists of three rounded boulders but photographs from before 1870 shows a single, much larger stone that must have been drastically altered after that time.
