£1 7m project to explore groundbreaking new treatment for biofilm infections in foot ulcers

Date Time £1.7m project to explore groundbreaking new treatment for biofilm infections in foot ulcers A new £1.7m project to explore using plasma jets and antimicrobial dressings to treat debilitating – and potentially deadly – wound infections launches today. The groundbreaking Plasma-activated Antimicrobial Hydrogel Therapy (PAHT) would provide a new treatment modality for biofilm infections in diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), a type of wound which make up around 10 per cent of the 2.2m wounds reported annually in the UK. More than a third of the +4.5m diabetics in the UK have a lifetime risk of foot ulcers, of which 50 per cent become infected. Around 10 per cent of these patients then require lower limb amputation due to tissue and bone infection. The prognosis for these patients is bleak; 44 per cent usually die within five years.

At Duke, Future of Pathology Lies in AI

Date Time At Duke, Future of Pathology Lies in AI Researchers at Duke University have been merging artificial intelligence with health care to improve patient outcomes for the better part of two decades. From making cochlear implants deliver purer sounds to the brain to finding hidden trends within reams of patient data, the field spans a diverse range of niches that are now beginning to make real impacts. Among these niches, however, there is one in which Duke researchers have always been at the leading edge-image analysis, with a broad team of researchers teaching computers to analyze images to unearth everything from various forms of cancer to biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease in the retina.

GPs in training to examine critical health issues in RACGP Academic Post program

RACGP GPs in training across Australia are set to examine a variety of critical health issues and work to improve primary care for patients as part of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) 2021 Academic Post program. Starting in February, the RACGP’s Academic Post program is a 12-month training term offered to Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) registrars, which aims to promote general practice research. Those who take part in the program need to complete a research project, supported by a university. This year’s projects range from researching why women in rural Australia have worse survival rates for breast cancer to how GPs can assist patients experiencing domestic violence. The list of 2021 program recipients and research projects is online here.

Although NSCLC is still not considered curable, physicians are enthusiastic about the progress being made in this field. New agents provide more durable responses, as demonstrated by improvements in progression-free survival and overall survival. Progress is demonstrated by the introduction of checkpoint inhibitors into the first-line setting and multiple next-generation targeted therapeutics which have dram
