With reduced federal funding in hand, a St. Augustine nonprofit is turning to creative methods to revamp housing for homeless families.
The Emergency Services and Homeless Coalition of St. Johns County is in St. Augustine near West King Street.
The nonprofit has 23 houses total, including transitional and permanent housing. Thirteen of those are over 100 years old and in need of significant renovation, the nonprofit s Executive Director Debi Redding said. The organization provides housing for homeless families, including single parents,
The homes, which are 600-800 square feet, have historical value and aren t allowed to be torn down. They were built for people who worked for Henry Flagler s Florida East Coast Railway, Redding said.
