Many years ago, when our kids were preteens, we were car and tent campers. We had a family-size tent, could pack it in a midsize car, car-top a canoe loaded with more camping goodies, and off we would go. A combination of my spouse’s worries about bears, and a certain lack of comfort, stifled our backpacking interest. As our kids matured and moved on, we then migrated to a slightly smaller tent, a blow-up, queen size air mattress and were constantly seeking more comfort that can come with moving into middle-age.
