After a one-year break because of the pandemic, college lacrosse is ready to decide its national champions, and North Carolina starts in a very good place: The Tar Heels are the top seed for both the men s and women s Division I tournaments.
UNC men s coach Joe Breschi, voted Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year for the third time, says his players are having the time of their life.
The eight seeded men s teams are: North Carolina (11-2), co-champion of the ACC with second-seeded Duke (12-2), Big Ten champ Maryland (12-0), reigning NCAA champion Virginia

Syracuse’s 7-5 regular season record is its worst since 2017, and its 2-4 conference record is its worst since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference. Despite having the 24th-best record in Division I, the Orange’s strength of schedule which included six games against ACC teams, all seeded in the tournament pushed them into an unseeded tournament bid.
Since most teams played majority conference opponents, records weren’t as important as they were in most years. Selection committee chair Tim Leonard said the committee focused on the “eye test” more than typical selection criteria.

The 2021 NCAA DI men s lacrosse tournament gets underway with eight first-round games spread out over Saturday and Sunday. After a long wait and no 2020 tournament because of COVID-19, a new champion will be crowned on Memorial Day yet again.
In the first round, we ll see if Maryland can stay perfect, a highly anticipated Georgetown versus Syracuse meeting and Denver facing Loyola (Maryland), among other matchups.

The top of the men s and women s brackets will look similar. North Carolina is the No. 1 seed in both tournaments, with the teams having a combined 29-2 record thanks to the women s team and its undefeated record.
