On Saturday night, Auburn, NY native and former Ithaca College baseball All-American Tim Locastro made Major League Baseball history with the Arizona Diamondbacks as he stole his 28th consecutive base without being caught to begin a career surpassing Tim Raines’ mark.

Locastro stole second base in the sixth inning off Cincinnati Reds pitcher Carson Fulmer. Locastro would go 4-for-5 in the contest with two runs scored in the Diamondbacks 8-3 win.

Joe Musgrove came into the season viewed by many as a breakout candidate, and it’s easy to see why. The 28-year-old Pirate-turned-Padre possesses plus stuff, and the change of scenery from Pittsburgh to his hometown of San Diego, no less portends more success…. particularly in the won-loss column. Musgrove went a paltry 1-5 with the N.L. Central cellar-dwellers in 2020, while his new club is poised to win, per our projections, 94 games in the current campaign.
By and large, the breakout has already happened, and not solely because the 6-foot-5, 235-pound right-hander hurled the year’s first no-hitter on Friday night. His 2020 peripherals were those of a pitcher who’d turned the corner. With the caveat that it was a pandemic-shortened season, Mugrove set career-bests in ERA, FIP, and strikeout rate, and more importantly, he did so with improved pitch profiles. Per StatCast, the spin and movement of his offerings were better than they’d ever been.

The Diamondbacks played their best game of the year so far, defeating the Reds and improving their record to 3-6.
Tim Locastro had 4 hits and set a major league record stolen base record. Riley Smith got the start, allowing just 2 runs in 6 efficient innings. Asdrubal Cabrera homered and drew two walks, Stephen Vogt had a big two out hit in a 5 run 5th. Eduardo Escobar homered for the 3rd straight game.
The game started with a very efficient first inning from Smith, retiring the side in order on 12 piches. Locastro reached base on a single leading off the bottom half but got picked off for his 3rd out on base this season. His night would improve markedly however.
“He’s got a 99 rating,” Lovullo said, grinning.
Locastro showed off that speed Saturday night with four hits and a stolen base that broke a big league record, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks cool off the Cincinnati Reds 8-3.
Locastro’s theft of second in the sixth inning was the 28th straight stolen base to start his career without getting caught. That broke the mark set by Hall of Famer Tim Raines, who stole 27 in a row from 1979-81. Records have been kept since 1951. The Baseball Hall of Fame requested Locastro’s cleats, which he had specially painted for the occasion.
